We recently had a poll on our Instagram page and the response for a closet cleanout was a top priority! This post will break down everything you need to know. So let's dive in...

If you’re needing some motivation to start the decluttering process, here are the reasons WHY you should declutter:

7 GREAT REASONS WHY TO DE-CLUTTER:

  • Donating clothes and items will make you feel good and help those who need them and will use them.
  • Decluttering reduces stress and increases self-esteem
  • Selling clothes you don’t wear will help pay for the clothes you do want to wear.
  • Having a tidy closet equals less stress in the morning when getting ready.
  • More space, more peace
  • Increases productivity and efficiency
  • You'll sleep better

BEFORE YOU GET STARTED:

  • We recommend having a few things on hand to make the decluttering process easier and more productive:
  • Totes to sort items you want to sell, trash, or donate.
  • Your phone. As you go through your closet, make note of items you have and need. Having it on your phone allows you to go back and check what's already in your closet or what you might be missing. This ensures intentional purchases. Blast those tunes on your phone while you work, too!
  • Fabric boxes are a great way to store seasonal items such as bikinis, activewear, or seasonal pieces.
  • New hangers! If it's been on your to-do list to upgrade your hangers, now is the time to do it as you declutter. I recommend wood hangers, they create a nice space in between clothing pieces and are sturdy and strong to last years to come.

LET'S GET STARTED!

  1. First, we recommend taking everything out of your closet, E V E R Y T H I N G, and begin with an empty closet. Place everything on your bed. Taking everything out also makes it easier to re-organize! A closet can be functional, organized, and beautiful all at once. Anyone can achieve it.
  2. Vacuum and wipe the closet, drawers, and shelves. You won’t see this space empty again so soon!
  3. Start sorting by looking at each item and decide what to keep. You only want to keep what matches your vision. Place the items you want to sell, trash or donate into the totes.
  4. Make sure to ask yourself: Do I look good when I wear this? Do I feel confident and comfortable when I wear it?
  5. Allow yourself a limited number of hangers for each type of clothing, such as 5 hangers for pants, 10 hangers for tops, 5 for sweaters etc. This method is one way to see what you really love in your closet!
  6. Keep only in-season clothing on hangers and use fabric boxes to store off-season clothing and store the boxes on the top self of your closet.

TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND:

IF YOU HAVEN’T WORN IT IN A YEAR+, IT’S TIME TO DONATE

  • Don’t hang onto those items that you're waiting to wear somewhere but never get around to it. That dress you know you might wear to a special event is the one exemption: as long as it still fits and is still in style.
  • Again, only keep the items if they still fit and if you would wear them when the time comes!

IF IT’S UNCOMFORTABLE OR DOESN’T MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD WHEN WEARING IT

  • If the material isn’t soft and comfortable, then you won’t reach for it! Especially if it’s scratchy or generally doesn’t make me feel great when wearing it. Your clothing should boost your confidence when wearing them, not make you feel self-conscious in them.

IF IT NO LONGER FITS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

  • Your personal style is an evolving process. If you only reach for neutral colors, then it's time to declutter colourful prints and patterns.

WHERE TO RESELL YOUR ITEMS?

Social Media: You’ll make the most money selling directly through social media, a great account on Instagram is @womensclosetypa or Facebook Marketplace
Consignment: If you want to get rid of something quick and easy and maybe make a little money in return, take your clothes to a consignment shop like Plato’s Closet or Style Encore in Saskatoon
